The smart key (also called proximity key, push-button start key, intelligent key, or smart fob, depending on manufacturer marketing) is structurally different from the older transponder key. A transponder is a passive RFID chip activated by physical insertion into the ignition lock. A smart fob is a battery-powered radio device that maintains continuous low-power communication with the car whenever it is within roughly 6 feet, enabling passive entry and push-button start without inserting anything.
Smart fob replacement cost varies dramatically by manufacturer, not just by model. The cheapest smart fob replacement on the market is the Toyota Corolla 2020+ at $200 to $300 from a locksmith. The most expensive mainstream smart fob is the BMW Display Key (5 and 7 series since 2016) at $500 to $700 from a dealer, because it includes a built-in touchscreen showing vehicle status. The mid-pack mainstream smart fob (Honda Civic EX, Toyota Camry SE, Ford F-150 Lariat) runs $240 to $360 from a locksmith.

Section 02 / How the proximity fob works
Two radios, rolling codes, continuous conversation
A smart fob contains two radios. A low-frequency receiver tuned to 125 kHz, which listens for the car's wake signal. And a UHF transmitter on 315 MHz (US market) or 433 MHz (European market), which sends responses back to the car. When you walk up to the car carrying the fob, the car periodically broadcasts a low-power wake signal. The fob wakes, identifies itself, and the car decides whether to unlock the doors. When you press the start button inside the cabin, the car re-verifies the fob is still present (using cabin-side antennas) before enabling ignition.
Authentication uses rolling-code cryptography. The fob and the car share a secret key established at pairing. Every authentication exchange generates a fresh challenge-response based on a counter that increments on each use. The car accepts the next N expected counter values (typically 256) and rejects everything else. This blocks naive replay attacks where a thief records the fob signal and tries to play it back later.
The rolling-code design is not bulletproof against more sophisticated attacks. Relay attacks (where two thieves extend the fob signal from inside the house to the car parked outside) remain effective on most fobs that do not implement Ultra-Wideband ranging. Manufacturers are gradually adding UWB on premium models (Apple CarKey, BMW Digital Key 3.0, Tesla phone-as-key 2.0) to defeat relay attacks, but the bulk of the deployed fleet remains vulnerable. Keep your fob in a Faraday pouch overnight if you live in a high-theft area.

Which makes lock programming to the dealer
Most automakers permit broad locksmith programming through licensed third-party tools. A handful restrict programming to dealer-licensed software, which strips the locksmith option entirely and pushes you to dealer pricing. As of mid-2026:
- BMW: most models since 2010. Requires BMW ISTA or Esys.
- Mercedes-Benz: most models since 2015. Requires XENTRY.
- VW: many MQB-platform models since 2015. Requires VAG ODIS or licensed third-party with online OEM token.
- Audi: inherits VW MQB restriction.
- Porsche: most models since 2015. Requires PIWIS.
- Range Rover and Land Rover (newer): JLR Pathfinder.
- Maserati, Bentley, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce: dealer-only across the lineup.

What is a rolling code on a smart key?
Rolling code is a cryptographic technique where the fob and the car negotiate a fresh challenge code on every interaction, so an attacker capturing one transmission cannot replay it later. Each press of the unlock button generates a new code based on a shared secret and a counter. The car accepts the next N expected codes (typically 256) and rejects everything else. This is what stops a simple radio recorder from cloning your fob from a parked car.

Do smart keys ever fail without being lost?
Yes but rarely. The most common failure is internal battery death (CR2032 lasts 2 to 4 years), which causes intermittent operation and eventually a fully dead fob. Replace the battery first, $3 to $10. Less common: water damage from a washing-machine cycle, physical damage from a drop on concrete (cracks the case and sometimes the circuit), and antenna detuning from being squeezed (rare). Real electronics failure on a smart fob is uncommon under 10 years of normal use.

What if I want to keep a backup smart key in the car?
Bad idea. A backup fob inside the cabin defeats the entire point of proximity-based theft protection. Anyone breaking into the car can drive away. Keep a backup at home, at work, or with a trusted neighbour. Some manufacturers (Audi, BMW) include a Faraday-shielded pouch with the car for “safe” backup storage; the spare fob does not respond to wake signals inside the pouch.

Mostly yes for mainstream brands where the protocol is well-understood.
