The most common flip key failure is not lost or damaged electronics. It is a cracked hinge. The plastic hinge that lets the blade swing out fails after hundreds of cycles, usually starting with a wobbly or loose blade lock. When this happens, swap the plastic shell only ($15 to $40), keep the existing chip and circuit board, and avoid the full replacement cost. Five minutes with a small Phillips screwdriver and you have a fresh-feeling fob with the same paired credentials.

How to fix a broken hinge without replacing the key
The plastic hinge on a flip key is the single highest-failure component. After roughly 1,000 to 2,000 open-close cycles (5 to 8 years of normal use), the hinge cracks at the pivot point. The blade then wobbles, fails to lock open, or fails to retract cleanly. The internal electronics, the chip, and the buttons typically continue to work fine.
Replacement shells are sold without electronics for $15 to $40 on Amazon, eBay, and key-shop sites. Search “[your make and model] flip key shell replacement” and confirm the shell matches your FCC ID-stamped fob. The shell ships with a new spring, a new hinge pin, and sometimes new button covers.
The swap takes 5 to 10 minutes with a small Phillips screwdriver. Open the old fob (usually two or three screws on the back). Lift the circuit board and the transponder chip carefully (the chip is glass-encapsulated and brittle). Transfer them to the new shell, snap closed, test the buttons. Done. The car still recognises the chip because the chip ID is unchanged. No re-pairing needed.
The exception is if the circuit board itself is cracked or water-damaged. In that case, a shell swap will not help. You need a new fully-electronic flip key from the locksmith or dealer.

Confirm by checking your existing key. A flip key has a button on the side that swings the blade out of the body. If your key has a fixed metal blade and a separate remote on the keychain, that is a transponder plus RKE, not a flip key. If your key has no metal blade at all and the car has push-button start, that is a smart proximity fob.
