Chevrolet Malibu Key Replacement Cost: $90 to $420 by Year
The Malibu was Chevrolet's volume midsize sedan for two decades until GM ended production in November 2024, so there are millions still on the road and a steady stream of Malibu key calls in our dispatch log. The key story has three acts: a cheap separate transponder key through 2012, the integrated flip key from 2013, and the push-button smart fob on the 2016 redesign. This page walks every generation with locksmith and dealer pricing, FCC IDs, and the one model year, 2016, where the answer depends on which Malibu you actually have.
Cost by model year
Malibu key cost is set by which generation your model year falls in. A 2009 Malibu uses a separate transponder blade, the cheapest at $90 to $180 from a locksmith. A 2015 Malibu runs the integrated OHT01060512 flip key at $120 to $230. A 2018 Malibu moved to the HYQ4EA smart proximity fob at $180 to $300. The newer the car, the higher-spec the key and the bigger the bill. Find your year in the table, then read the generation note below it. The one trap is 2016, which sold as two different cars; see the split-year section after the table.
| Model years | Generation | Key type | Locksmith | Dealer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 - 2012 | Sixth and seventh-gen Malibu (Epsilon) | Transponder blade key + separate RKE remote fob | $90 - $180 | $160 - $260 |
| 2013 - 2016 | Eighth-gen Malibu (Epsilon II) + 2016 Malibu Limited | 5-button flip key (integrated transponder + remote start) | $120 - $230 | $200 - $320 |
| 2016 - 2020 | Ninth-gen Malibu (smart key) | Smart proximity fob (push-button start) | $180 - $300 | $280 - $400 |
| 2021 - 2024 | Ninth-gen Malibu, late run (smart key) | Smart proximity fob (push-button start) | $200 - $320 | $300 - $420 |
The Malibu we replace keys for most is the 2016 to 2020 ninth generation, where the HYQ4EA smart proximity fob is standard with push-button start. The locksmith range for that fob is $180 to $300. The dealer range is $280 to $400. Both numbers include the cut emergency blade, the proximity pairing to the car, and a verification drive.
If your Malibu is a 2013 to 2015, you have the integrated flip key, FCC ID OHT01060512. This is the cheapest modern Malibu key to replace: an OEM-spec blank runs $25 to $55 online, and a mobile locksmith cuts and programs it for $60 to $120, so a fully working spare is $85 to $175 versus $200 to $320 at a dealer. The flip key is also the most common Malibu on used lots, so it is the one to know.
The 2016 model year is the trap. GM sold two different cars badged Malibu in 2016: the all-new ninth-generation car with push-button start and the HYQ4EA fob, and the fleet-only Malibu Limited, which was the old eighth-generation body still on the OHT01060512 flip key. A locksmith who quotes from the year alone, without checking whether you have a key slot or a start button, will land in the wrong bracket and the price gap is $60 to $120.
Generation by generation
GEN-EPS-1
2004 - 2012 / Sixth and seventh-gen Malibu (Epsilon)
Key type
Transponder blade key + separate RKE remote fob
Locksmith
$90 - $180
Dealer
$160 - $260
The ignition key is a PK3 transponder blade, separate from the keyless-entry remote. The remote (KOBGT04A) covers Lock, Unlock, Trunk and Panic. With one working key the transponder can be self-programmed per the owner's manual; the remote still needs a locksmith or dealer. Very low cost, wide aftermarket supply shared with Cobalt and Pontiac G6.
GEN-EPS-2
2013 - 2016 / Eighth-gen Malibu (Epsilon II) + 2016 Malibu Limited
Key type
5-button flip key (integrated transponder + remote start)
Locksmith
$120 - $230
Dealer
$200 - $320
GM's integrated flip key, FCC ID OHT01060512, 315 MHz, HU100 keyway, CR2032 battery, with Lock, Unlock, Trunk, Remote Start and Panic. In 2016 this carried over on the fleet-only Malibu Limited while the all-new ninth generation launched alongside it. No onboard programming on a fresh remote; a locksmith pairs it.
GEN-9-EA
2016 - 2020 / Ninth-gen Malibu (smart key)
Key type
Smart proximity fob (push-button start)
Locksmith
$180 - $300
Dealer
$280 - $400
The redesigned ninth-generation Malibu moved to push-button start with the HYQ4EA proximity fob, 433 MHz, 46E chip, shared with the Cruze and Camaro of the same window. Locksmith-programmable with the right GM tool. Confirm your fob FCC ID before ordering a blank.
GEN-9-ES
2021 - 2024 / Ninth-gen Malibu, late run (smart key)
Key type
Smart proximity fob (push-button start)
Locksmith
$200 - $320
Dealer
$300 - $420
Late-run Malibus moved to the HYQ4ES proximity fob, 433 MHz, mechanically similar to the HYQ4EA but a different pairing profile, so order by exact FCC ID. GM ended Malibu production in November 2024 when the Fairfax plant was retooled for the Bolt EV, so 2024 was effectively the last model year.
Section 02 / The 2016 split
How to tell which 2016 Malibu key you need
2016 is the only Malibu year where the badge does not tell you the key. Look at the car, not the year. If it has a physical ignition slot and the key folds out from the fob with a button, it is the Malibu Limited and you need the OHT01060512 flip key, $120 to $230 from a locksmith. If it has a push-button start and you carry a one-piece proximity fob, it is the new ninth generation and you need the HYQ4EA smart fob, $180 to $300 from a locksmith.
The fastest confirmation is the FCC ID printed on the back of your existing fob. OHT01060512 means flip key. HYQ4EA means smart fob. Read it to the locksmith before they dispatch so the correct blank is on the van. A wasted trip for the wrong blank is the single most common cause of a Malibu quote running over.
Section 03 / The dispatch script
What to say when you ring an auto locksmith
“Hi, I need a replacement smart proximity fob for a 2018 Chevrolet Malibu LT, FCC ID HYQ4EA, push-button start. I have the VIN. I have one working fob and want a spare. Can you cut and program at my location? What is the all-in price including programming, no extras? Do you accept customer-supplied OEM-spec blanks?”
- Read the FCC ID off the back of your existing fob first.
- For a 2016 car, say whether it is push-button start or a key slot.
- Lock in a single all-in figure.
- Confirm coverage of your specific year for Chevrolet Malibu.
- Get the quote in SMS for a paper trail.

Malibu shortcut: a CR2032 battery in the flip key or smart fob lasts about two to three years. If the fob range drops or the dash flashes a low-key warning, swap the battery before assuming the fob has failed. Battery swap guide.
Frequently asked
- 01
How much is a key for a 2015 or 2016 Chevy Malibu?
A 2015 Malibu (eighth-gen Epsilon II) uses the integrated OHT01060512 flip key, $120 to $230 from a locksmith or $200 to $320 at a dealer. A 2016 Malibu is a split year: the all-new ninth-generation car with push-button start takes the HYQ4EA smart fob at $180 to $300 from a locksmith, while the fleet-only 2016 Malibu Limited kept the same $120 to $230 flip key as the 2015. Check whether your 2016 has a key slot (flip key) or a start button (smart fob) before quoting, and match your year to the table above.
- 02
How much does a Chevrolet Malibu key replacement cost in 2026?
Between $90 and $420 depending on year and key type. A 2009 Malibu transponder key is the cheapest, $90 to $180 from a locksmith. A 2022 Malibu smart proximity fob is the priciest, $300 to $420 from a dealer. The most common job, a 2018 Malibu HYQ4EA smart fob, runs $180 to $300 with a mobile locksmith.
- 03
Why does my 2016 Malibu key depend on which Malibu I have?
Because 2016 is a split year. GM sold two different cars badged Malibu that year: the all-new ninth-generation Malibu with push-button start and the HYQ4EA smart fob, and the fleet-only Malibu Limited, which was the previous eighth-generation body still using the OHT01060512 flip key. Check whether your car has a key slot and a flip key (Limited) or a push-button start and a proximity fob (new ninth gen). The smart-fob job costs $60 to $120 more.
- 04
Can a locksmith program a Chevrolet Malibu key?
Yes for every model year. GM does not restrict Malibu programming to dealers. The 2004 to 2012 transponder key can even be self-programmed when you have one working key. The 2013 to 2024 flip keys and smart fobs need a locksmith or dealer tool, but mainstream kits (AutoProPad, Smart Pro, GM MDI) cover Malibu fully. Pick a locksmith who lists your specific year.
- 05
What is the cheapest way to get a spare Malibu key?
On the 2013 to 2016 flip-key Malibu, buy an OEM-spec OHT01060512 blank online for $25 to $55, then pay a mobile locksmith $60 to $120 to cut and program it. Total $85 to $175 versus $200 to $320 at a dealer. On the 2004 to 2012 transponder key, if you still have one working key you can self-program a cut spare and only pay for cutting.
- 06
Is the Malibu smart key the same as the Cruze or Camaro key?
They share the same FCC ID family. The 2016 to 2020 Malibu, Cruze and Camaro all use the HYQ4EA proximity fob, and the late-run cars use HYQ4ES. The shell and electronics are interchangeable as a blank, but the pairing data is car-specific, so a Cruze fob will not start a Malibu until it is programmed to that VIN. Order by exact FCC ID printed on the back of your existing fob.
- 07
What if I lose all my Malibu keys?
The locksmith or dealer reads the immobiliser code from the Body Control Module, decodes the door lock to cut a fresh blade, then programs every key from scratch. Add $80 to $200 to the standard quote. On the 2016+ ninth-generation smart-key cars, all-keys-lost is doable in your driveway by a well-equipped mobile locksmith, no tow needed.
- 08
Did the Chevy Malibu get discontinued, and does that affect key supply?
Yes, GM ended Malibu production in November 2024 when the Fairfax, Kansas plant was retooled for the Bolt EV. It does not hurt key supply. The Malibu shared its OHT01060512 flip key and HYQ4EA/HYQ4ES smart fobs with high-volume GM models like the Cruze, Camaro and Equinox, so OEM and aftermarket blanks remain widely stocked.
